Miami Trace tennis opens ‘17 season with win over Hillsboro

The Miami Trace girls tennis team, after not winning a match in 2016, began the 2017 season on a hot Tuesday, Aug. 15 with a 3-2 win over visiting Hillsboro.

After many decades as rivals in the South Central Ohio League, the schools met as members of the new Frontier Athletic Conference.

“We are very excited,” Miami Trace head coach Kim Schirtzinger said.

At first singles, Miami Trace’s Cassie VanDyke lost to Jessica Moon, 4-6, 3-6.

At second singles, Miami Trace’s Anita Pursell lost to Breanne Fender, 1-6, 2-6.

Miami Trace won the third singles court and both varsity doubles courts.

Bayley Thompson rallied in the second set to beat Abby Hamon, 6-2, 6-4 at third singles.

At first doubles, Cameron Bucher and Haiven Pepper defeated Morgan Keller and Lyric Rickman, 6-3, 6-0.

At second doubles, Jacklynn Wisecup and Beth Hogsett beat Julia Hart and Kenzie Adams, 6-0, 6-1.

Miami Trace won two j-v doubles matches.

Kenzie Seyfang and Kyleigh Slone won an 8-game pro-set, 8-0 and Taylor Moore and Savannah Wisecup won, 8-3 (opponent’s names were not available).

In one inter-squad match, Angela Godinez and Kennidy McDaniel beat teammates Loryn Leisure and Lydia Zwoll, 7-3.

Miami Trace’s tennis team will make its first trip to Jackson for an FAC match Thursday and then will play at former SCOL rivals Clinton-Massie on Monday.
