MT baseball beats Astros, 12-1

The Miami Trace varsity baseball team defeated East Clinton 12-1 in five innings Tuesday, April 4.

The game was played at Miami Trace High School.

Austin Mathews was the winning pitcher.

He pitched five innings with three strikeouts, three walks, three hits allowed and one run (it was earned).

East Clinton scored its only run in the first inning.

Ethan Cornwell scored on a single by Cameron Conner.

Miami Trace put up six runs in the bottom of the first.

Trenton Harris and Brady Wallace both singled and a walk to Mitchell Creamer loaded the bases.

Logan Robinson was hit by a pitch, scoring Harris to tie the game.

Jacob Batson drew a walk that scored Wallace. That proved to be the winning run of the game.

Mathews walked, scoring Creamer to make it 3-1.

Hunter Moore delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Robinson to extend the lead to 4-1.

Heath Cockerill walked to load the bases again and Harris came up for the second time in the inning and hit a double, driving in two to make it 6-1.

The Panthers put a run on the board in the second without benefit of a hit.

Batson walked and stole second. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another errant pitch.

In the bottom of the third, Cockerill and Josh Morton singled. Wallace grounded out to score Cockerill.

Morton scored on a wild pitch and Creamer drew a walk.

Robinson singled, followed by a walk to Batson.

Mathews singled, driving in two.

The Panthers put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

“After a tough loss last night (3-0 to Wilmington on April 3), (the fellows) went out tonight and played hard and took care of business,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Smith said. “Austin Mathews pitched a great game, shutting them down after the first inning.

“The whole team responded today to get back on track,” Smith said.

On Wednesday, Miami Trace visited Mitchell Park in Greenfield and run-ruled the Tigers, 14-1 in five innings.

Miami Trace is scheduled to host Hillsboro Friday at 5 p.m.
