Getting Ahead: A Leap of Faith

0

When I was a boy; my dad took our family to a camp that was located in the mountains of West Virginia just west of the George Washington National Forest. It had numerous log cabins, a baseball diamond, a football field and a river that ran through it that you could canoe on.

Dad had been scheduled to be one of the speakers at a gospel event that was being held there. It was a wonderful experience until I decided to show some of the other boys how good I was at climbing trees.

After climbing like a monkey about 20 to 30 feet up in a large sycamore tree, I proceeded to come down jumping head first from the limb I was standing on, thinking I would catch the limb below me with both hands, and swing to a lower limb close to the ground.

The problem was that it was dark and I could not see the condition of the limb I was diving for. It was rotten and when I reached in the limb came off in my hands and I fell head first to the ground. Fortunately, I landed on my shoulder and not my head. I did however; break my shoulder so badly that I had to be moved to a major hospital that had a world renowned bone surgeon to get it repaired.

There is an old saying; “Look before you leap.”

The only problem was it was dark and I could not see well enough to know that the limb was rotten. Are you sure there is enough light in your life to see clearly the thing that you are about to grab hold of? What is the condition of the things you are planning on putting your trust in? What if that person, situation, or circumstance lets you down?

These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets in the Washington High School Gymnasium at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30. Come at 7 p.m. and be part of our Wednesday night Bible Study and Children’s Ministry on the third floor above Trends at 120 West Court Street.
