Getting Ahead: Pulling weeds

0

There is a weed in our area called water crest and most farmers have at one time or the other had to deal with it. In a few years, if left unattended, it will take over a pasture field. It has a bright and full yellow bloom and it can look very pretty as it totally absorbs the field in a sea of yellow. At a distance, it can look like the beautiful fields in Western Canada filled with the yellow blooms of the canola plant. Even though they can look the same, one plant is good for nothing and the other very useful.

When I was a boy we had a pasture that the water crest had taken over. My dad informed us that when it was in full bloom we were going to get everyone in the field and pull it all up by hand. He knew that it would be very easy to identify by its bright yellow bloom and that when the blooms were off it would go to seed and there would be even more water crest to deal with the next year. We lined up across that pasture field and within a few days we had pulled the water crest, loaded it in a wagon, and dumped it in the woods where it could no longer choke out the pasture.

From time to time weeds will grow in our lives. When this happen it seems that there is multiplied turmoil and trouble coming at us. They can be deceptive and even have the appearance of something good, but they are blooming and about to go to seed which will cause even more problems. Is there a way to identify the weeds in our life?

Would it be possible to pull up those things and get rid of them like we did the water crest? Would the job of pulling those weeds be easier if we had the help and assistance of others?

These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets in the Washington High School Gymnasium at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30. Come at 7 p.m. and be part of our Wednesday night Bible Study and Children’s Ministry on the third floor above Trends at 120 West Court Street.
