Getting Ahead: ‘Use It or Lose It’

0

I was watching a commercial recently that started with a man sitting on a porch swing with his dog at his side. The voice over them said: “A body at rest tends to remain at rest and a body in motion tends to remain in motion.”

It was a commercial for some type of medicine that could make you feel better and then they read off a laundry list of side effects that could make you worse. That being said: the side effects did not lessen the truth in their statement.

A statement that I have heard that has the same meaning is: “use it or lose it,” and I have experienced the reality of that statement many times. I have let a car sit too long without starting it and when I hit the starter nothing happened because the battery had lost its charge. Everyone that owns an airplane knows that the best thing that you can do to keep it running properly is to fly it often. Then there are the joints in our body that get stiff if we are in the same position for too long a period of time and the muscles that are worked get bigger and stronger.

We all know these things are true about cars, airplanes, joints and muscles but is there a deeper truth for which these things are just a shadow? Do you know that our things and our bodies are controlled by our actions and choices? What does it take to put the things in motion that if not in motion will be lost? Could it be that we have put some things in motion that need to remain at rest? How can we know the difference?

These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets in the Washington High School Gymnasium at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30. Come at 7 p.m. and be part of our Wednesday night Bible Study and Children’s Ministry on the third floor above Trends at 120 West Court St. in Washington C.H.
