On June 10, the Plains High School Class of 1966 celebrated their 50th year class reunion.
It was held at Deer Creek State Park Lodge private shelter house. It was a year of intense details and planning with the date being set a year in advance. The word soon got out and all the classmates worked hard in sharing addresses, phone numbers, and e-mails. The organizational committee was Mike Endres, Larry Griffith and David Jones. It always takes lots of good secretaries to keep the correspondence going and the wives of the main committee got into some action as well.
There were 66 class members with 11 now deceased. Betty Dennison and Peggy Garrison put together a beautiful and meaningful remembrance table. Delbert Perry (1995); Harold Dunn (2003); Martena Hanson (2004); Sharon Clark (2008); Alvie Henry (2009); Esther (Myers) Mason (2010); Vickie (Ames) Fryer (2010); Steve McGath (2015); Roger Rice (2015); Mike Emrick (March 3); and Bob Clifton (June 6). A classmate who passed prior to high school was Mike Trimble who was remembered as well.
Class members were asked to submit any pictures they might like to include in a video that was produced by Mick Phillips and Jeff Wallace. There were also lots of pictures included from the year book. Each class member received a printed t-shirt with class of 1966 and school mascot of the Plains Blue Devils.
Joy (Merritt) Clarity had a gift bag for each classmate with pens, pencils, notepads of 66, candy bar with 1966, a forget-me-not silk flower, and an old picture of the front of the school building.
DJ John Chamberlain provided music for the evening (oldie but goodies tunes). Ron Bauman also helped with sound system and made class announcements throughout the evening.
Connie (Porter) Lindsey contacted a photographer for a class picture and reported the news of the big class reunion event. The photographer for the evening was Jenny Meyer of Fayette County.
Special guests who attended were high school teachers Dr. John Brown and wife (science and math), who traveled from North Carolina. Tom Shoemaker (basketball coach, biology, health & P.E.) and his wife Dee Shoemaker (commercial, typing, advisor of Echo staff “yearbook”) who came from Chillicothe. Some of the class members traveled from Michigan, West Virginia, Nevada, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, Wyoming, South Carolina, and Florida to be a part of the reunion.
The following day was busy for many of the classmates as a tour was given of the old high school and the classrooms brought back many memories. A school bus ride was given around the town of Mt. Sterling. The tour and bus ride was set up by Ed Mason. Other classmates were golfing at Deer Creek Golf Course while some of the ladies engaged in brunch and more conversations of catching up. The evening of June 11 was an all classes reunion held at the Mt. Sterling Community Center. The class of 1966 was very well represented for that occasion as well. Class member Dr. Alex Brown, professor of nuclear physics at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. was recognized for his outstanding accomplishments and work.
It was a great evening of friendship, food, laughter, sharing funny stories, reliving winning ball games, band talk, shop talk, talk of various competitions of both band and vocal, cheerleading events, proms, and just all that goes along with being in high school.
Thanks to everyone in the class of 1966 who made it possible to be together for the big celebration. Thanks for the memories.
