A Columbus man entered a guilty plea and was sentenced Monday in the Fayette County Court of Common Pleas to an agreed sentence of one year in an Ohio correctional institution.

Christopher S. Karaffa, 31, was arrested Oct. 24, 2015 during a vehicle stop on State Route 743 in Washington CH.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call that three men in a red Cadillac with a temporary tag were “passing a joint” while they were traveling on U.S. 62. A deputy sheriff located the red Cadillac and clocked it at 59 miles per hour in a 55 mph speed zone.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop on State Route 753 and “was able to detect the smell of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle,” reports said. Karaffa stated to the deputy that the occupants of the vehicle had been smoking a blunt and produced a small clear plastic bag with a green leafy substance. The deputy asked Karaffa to exit the vehicle, which he did, and the officer noticed burns on multiple areas of his hands.

A second deputy arrived. When the deputy made contact with the passenger of the vehicle, the glove box was open and a straw with a white powder substance could be seen, according to reports. Upon further search of the vehicle, 9mm rounds were found in the glove box and on the floor. A 9mm Jennings Bryco was located underneath the front passenger seat with a magazine that had several rounds in it. Karaffa reportedly said he was unaware of the firearm in the vehicle and said it was property of someone else.

Located in the trunk of the vehicle was a small bucket with a Powerade bottle containing a clear unknown substance, Drano, and an instant cold pack, which were identified by the deputy as precursors to manufacturing methamphetamine.

The Washington C.H. Fire Department was called in for assistance. The deputy put on a respirator and gloves and removed the contents of the bucket and took it a safe distance from the vehicles. All of the contents in the bucket were identified as the chemical ingredients used in the methamphetamine manufacturing process. An oxycodone pill and an unknown pill was located in a passenger’s wallet.

The vehicle was towed. Christopher S. Karaffa had a previous charge to disqualify him from owning a firearm and he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of chemicals, possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

During sentencing on Monday, Karaffa told Judge Steven Beathard that he had previously been to prison on other counts and was currently on probation on a misdemeanor charge in Highland County.

“This will be my fifth number and I’ve been yet to be offered a program and I’ve been asking for programs numerous times through numerous different courtrooms and I just think that this ain’t gonna help me at all. I mean … it’s going to be worser this next time when I get out and just would like to let you know that I would like to get a program and better myself but it just ain’t gonna help me,” said Karaffa.

“How many programs have you tried on your own?” said Beathard.

“Huh? I haven’t tried any my own, your Honor,” said Karaffa.

“Alright. Mr. Weade?” said Beathard.

“Your Honor, the state just asks the jointly recommended sentence be approved,” said Jess Weade, the Fayette County prosecuting attorney.

“The sentence does comply with the Ohio felony sentencing statutes. He has served, as he says, four prior prison sentences, so I’m not required to make any other findings even with the consecutive sentences because this is an agreed sentence. Accordingly I will impose the agreed sentence [in the case],” said Beathard.

Karaffa plead guilty to illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for manufacture of drugs and having weapons under disability. Karaffa was sentenced to 12 months in prison, and forfeiture of all right, title, and interest of the defendant in the 2004 Cadillac Deville. He was credited with 31 days of jail time credit for time spent in custody.
