A Washington C.H. resident was charged with impersonating a peace officer Sunday night after he allegedly claimed to a group of people that he was a sheriff’s deputy and was carrying a pistol.

At around 10 p.m. Sunday, Washington C.H. Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Circle Avenue in reference to a person claiming to have a gun on his person. Adam J. Dennis, 25, of 424 S. Main St., was identified as the suspect and located on his front porch, according to reports.

Several people who had been playing tennis at the tennis courts in the area told police that Dennis yelled at them and claimed to have a .45-caliber gun. He then allegedly walked over to the group and claimed to be a deputy sheriff and said that he had a .38-caliber gun on his person.

According to reports, the group requested to see identification that Dennis was a deputy. He allegedly told the group that his identification was at his house, and he then left to get it.

Several witness statements were taken by police and Dennis was arrested for impersonating a police officer. He was taken to the Fayette County Jail and has since bonded out.
