The Fayette County Commissioners recently approved two contracts recently that will help to employ youth, ages 14 to 24, in a summer work program.

It was moved by commissioner Jack DeWeese and seconded by commissioner Dan Dean, per the recommendation of Faye Williamson, director of the Fayette County Department of Job and Family Services (JFS), to approve a contract between JFS and Workforce Services Unlimited. The goal of the contract is to provide summer youth employment to eligible applicants. The contract will be from May 1 through Aug. 31. A second contract, between JFS and Fayette County Community Action Commission, also helps to provide summer youth employment to eligible applicants.

The commissioners approved a few other business items during their recent meeting. It was moved by Dean and seconded by DeWeese to authorize Steve Luebbe, county engineer, to advertise to receive bids on May 23 at 10:15 a.m. in the commissioners’ office for the 2016 Fayette County Chip Seal Program, where approximately 10 miles will be completed. The engineer’s estimate for the project is $137,618.

The commissioners also accepted a proposal, as recommended by Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, to purchase Live Scan System and related equipment, training, service and support with a 12-month warranty included on scanner and software. The commissioners also extended an agreement for the guaranteed maintenance service for the recording equipment at the sheriff’s office, per Stanforth’s recommendation.

A second public hearing date was set during the meeting regarding applications for the 2016 Federal Community Development Block Grant Allocation Program. The meeting will be held on May 16 at 10 a.m. in the Fayette County Commissioners’ Office, 133 South Main St., Suite 401.
