Sex offender found at hotel Monday

A local sex offender who was allegedly not living at the home where he’s registered was taken into custody by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies Monday evening at a hotel near Jeffersonville.

Earlier on Monday, the FCSO issued a press release stating that during an address verification check for registered sex offenders living in Fayette County, deputies discovered that Carl R. Penwell, 30, of 2414 Bogus Road #7 in Washington C.H., was not residing at that location as previously reported to the FCSO.

An arrest warrant was filed charging Penwell with failure to register a change of address as a sex offender, a third-degree felony.

Sheriff Vernon Stanforth extended his appreciation to those who provided information that led to the arrest of Penwell Monday evening.

“His capture was directly related to multiple tips received from citizens following the press release,” said Stanforth.

Penwell is a registered Tier II sex offender and is required to register with law enforcement every 180 days for a period of 25 years. He is currently incarcerated in the Fayette County Jail awaiting an appearance in Washington C.H. Municipal Court.
