Daytime television host and former Cincinnati mayor Jerry Springer is scheduled to serve as the keynote speaker at the Fayette County Democrats Annual Fall Dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

According to reports, influential Democrats are encouraging Springer to run for governor of Ohio in 2018, but Springer has not yet made an announcement.

Springer went into politics and worked as a campaign aide for Sen. Robert Kennedy. After Kennedy’s assassination, Springer practiced law at a Cincinnati law firm, but he soon returned to politics, according to Ohio History Central. In 1971, Cincinnati voters elected him to the city council as an at-large member. He remained on the council from 1972 to 1977, when he became mayor of Cincinnati.

In 1982, Springer became a reporter and commentator for Cincinnati’s WLWT television station. By 1984, he became the station’s lead anchor.

In 1991, he started “The Jerry Springer Show,” a controversial syndicated tabloid talk show hosted by Springer that still airs today. The show began as a politically-oriented talk show but in 1994, it became more targeted toward sensationalism with controversial guests and topics.

“We are excited to have Jerry Springer as our special guest,” said Judy Craig, chair of the Fayette County Democratic Party Executive Committee. “He is definitely not the same person as his television personality. He’s an excellent speaker and we encourage everyone to come and see him.”

David Pepper, the chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, is also scheduled to speak at at the Fayette County Democrats dinner, which will be held at the American Legion Post 25, 1240 US 22 Northwest in Washington C.H.

Doors will open Oct. 24 at 6:45 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 each.

An auction sponsored by the Fayette County Democratic Party Executive Committee will follow the main program.
