Committee holds Armco employees retirement party

Armco employees held their ninth official retirement party recently at the American Legion in Washington C.H. The event celebrated years of labor at the local steel buildings plant which is no longer in business.

A social hour was held to renew old acquaintances followed by the invocation given by Phil Johnson. It was followed with the Pledge of Allegiance.

A delicious buffet dinner was prepared and served by the American Legion staff.

After the meal, chairman Eddie Fisher welcomed the former employees and pointed out that the great number of attendees was a wonderful testimony to the true established friendships made over the years by the employees. He also introduced the committee for the evening’s event.

Retirees came from various parts of Ohio. Dave Adams traveled the most miles to the reunion. The oldest attendee was Daryl Hamby, who is 98 years of age. Denver Hixon was recognized with 41 years of continuous service.

Gary Herdman read the names of the 21 co-workers who have died since the last reunion two years ago. A moment of silence was held in remembrance of these employees. Herdman also recognized Fisher for all of the years he has organized the Armco reunions.

Fisher introduced Maurice “Moe” Pfeifer, speaker for the evening. Pfeifer, a 21-year veteran in the education field, served as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and administrator in the Washington Court House school district for 15 years.

Pfeifer took his attentive audience on a journey from childhood days to the present. Football, the love of his life, was tough as he had to maintain a “C” average to play and this was the most difficult. That being said, he is now the holder of three master’s degrees. The many awards he received were a reflection of the people who were instrumental in molding him and his future. His philosophy of life is a belief that, “You get everything you want from life by helping others get what they want.”
