As A.A. Milnes’ beloved character, Winnie the Pooh, said, “The only reason for being a bee that I know of is making honey…and the only reason for making honey is so I can eat it.”
Pooh was a simple soul and a bear who loved to eat honey. He spoke of the honey bee, a favorite bee because of its unique gift of honey. But the honey bee doesn’t just give us a delicious sweet to spread on our cornbread or spoon into tea….un-treated and unpasteurized honey is highly medicinal both eaten and as a wound treatment. The honey bee also relies on stores of its own honey to make it through each winter.
Fayette County is the home to many beekeepers and several sell honey and honey bee products at the Fayette County Farmers’ Market. Sellers are happy to talk about the flavors and health benefits of honey, the art and fun of raising bees, and share personal experiences.
The market is open every Saturday morning from 8:30 to noon and is located in the municipal parking lot on the corner of South Main and East East streets in Washington C.H. SNAP EBT food benefit cards and credit/debit cards are accepted. We are offering again veggie SNAPS; it permits those who use a SNAP EBT card for food items to receive matching dollar tokens (one for one) for additional fruits and vegetables!
So,”buy one, get one” for fruit and vegetables, up to $10 every market day! If you are unfamiliar with this, ask David about the veggie SNAPS produce program for SNAP EBT cards. Please note that Senior Farmers Market Coupons will be distributed on Thursday, June 15 from 9-11 a.m. at the Fayette County Community Action Commission, 1400 US 22, Washington Court House. Individuals at least 60 years old and meeting income guidelines may pick up $50 of farmers’ market coupons for fresh produce and honey on this date only.

Greens & Greenery (Katrina Bush): Tomato, cucumber, squash and pepper plants as well as other chemical free vegetable, herb and flowering plants (annuals and perennials) with a focus on heirloom vegetables and plants for pollinators. Sustainably grown lettuce and other seasonal produce.
Jones Farm Fresh Produce (Jon & Taylor Jones): Fresh produce (strawberries, lettuce, green onions, zucchini, yellow squash and garlic scapes), eggs, chicken breast, wings, whole chickens, pork sausage patties, sweet Italian links, maple breakfast links, ground pork and pork chops.
Keypoint Farm (Stauffer, Nevin & family): Seasonal produce including beets, cabbage and tomatoes.
King Farms (Jeff and Sandi King): Strawberries and baked goods.
