Many fruits, vegetables available now at Fayette County Farmers’ Market

While many are already looking forward to corn, tomatoes, green beans and melons (later season crops), there are many fruits and vegetables that are available now and include lettuce, kale, green onions, strawberries, asparagus, rhubarb, and more.

One can generally assume that the more vibrant the color of vegetables, the higher the nutrient value. The salad you make from lettuce and other cool season crops from your own garden or purchased from a local grower, will be shades of darker green and reds than the traditional iceberg lettuce. Romaine lettuce is quite high in Vitamin A (essential for vision health, bone growth, and other health-related functions). Strawberries have high levels of antioxidants (polyphenols). Rhubarb (actually a vegetable) has a great deal of both soluble and insoluble fiber along with the benefits of vitamin C and calcium. The health benefits can be accentuated by adding raw, local honey for sweetening, instead of sugar.

The Fayette County Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday morning from 8:30 to noon and is located in the municipal parking lot on the corner of South Main and East East streets in Washington C.H.

We are offering again veggie SNAPS; it permits those who use a SNAP EBT card for food items to receive matching dollar tokens (one for one) for additional fruits and vegetables! The following list contains the names of the vendors that expect to set up for the Saturday Market and products they expect to have on hand:

Chilcote Farm (Bruce & Marlene Chilcote): honey, cookies, brownies, and small cakes.

Dale’s Crafts (Dale Butler): rustic benches, red, white, & blue benches, swinging chair, Uncle Sam, serving trays, outdoor games (washer toss, corn hole bags).

Daniel’s Honey (Daniel Surina): raw honey.

Engedi (Alana Walters with Janet and Beth): variety of baked goods

Forgotten Way Farm (Cathy Ludi): doTERRA essential oils (therapeutic grade essential oils and products), homemade lye soap, lip balms, bath salts and bombs, laundry soaps & wooden signs and items. Stop by and see how to receive $50 in FREE oils!

Greens & Greenery (Katrina Bush): Farm grown vegetable, herb and flowering plants (annuals and perennials) with a focus on heirloom vegetables and plants for pollinators. Sustainable grown seasonal produce.

Jones Farm Fresh Produce (Jon & Taylor Jones): strawberries, lettuce, green onions, eggs, chicken breast, wings, whole chickens, pork sausage patties, sweet Italian links, maple breakfast links, ground pork and pork chops.
