Names can be added to Veterans Memorial

The mission was to “design, fund, construct and dedicate everlasting tributes to honor those who have served and to remember those who” sacrificed to ensure that we maintain our freedoms.

Under the direction of memorial chairman Eddie Halterman and committee members Kurt Coil, Roberta Bowers, Ruthie Burden, Tracy Rankin Coe, Glenn Rankin and Mark Hoppes, more than $80,000 was raised originally to erect a Jeffersonville Area Veterans Memorial monument and surround it with a park. Starting with names of those who served in the Revolutionary War through the present, there are over 1,100 names listed.

The memorial was dedicated on July 15, 2006. Over the years there has been some settling of the concrete and the need for a handrail to be installed. These repair necessities were paid for by a grant from Fayette County Travel and Tourism.

Maybe you didn’t know names were still be accepted since the dedication; maybe you didn’t know who to call to submit a name to; maybe you thought a veteran needs to be deceased in order to have their name submitted.

With Memorial Day quickly approaching, the committee is currently seeking the names of those individuals who have served or are currently serving and have not submitted their names to the committee. The criteria for submission of names is having been born or raised in Jefferson or Jasper townships, that the veteran went to school in Jeffersonville, or that the veteran lives in Jefferson or Jasper townships now.

There is no charge to the veteran or the family for inclusion of a name on the memorial. However, you must be able to present a DD214, a Veteran ID Card or records of your service. Names should be submitted by May 1 to be ready for the 2017 Memorial Day ceremonies.

To submit a veteran’s name for the memorial or for more information about the Jeffersonville Area Veterans Memorial, call Glenn Rankin (740-505-9335) or Eddie Halterman (740-335-6090).
