Cheryl Binegar, SSA/Good Life coordinator, received the 2016 Ed Comer Award at the 14th-annual NADD: State of Ohio IDD/MI Conference on Sept. 20.

The Ed Comer Award for Excellence in Service to Individuals with IDD was established in 2008 by the Ohio Coordinating Center of Excellence (CCOE) in Mental Illness/Intellectual Disability. The award is named for Ed Comer, who provided program administration for the Ohio CCOE from its inception until his retirement in April of 2008.

The award is presented to individuals who make extraordinary contributions in the fields of mental illness and intellectually disability by motivating systems of care to work together, by establishing training programs to expand skills and confidence for those who work the field, by insisting that more clinical services are necessary to maintain individuals with dual diagnosis in their home communities, and/or by promoting more research efforts in the field of dual diagnosis. The award is presented on behalf of all those individuals whose lives have been improved by these efforts.

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities presented the award to Cheryl, and shared a few quotes that peers used to describe her. Some of the quotes included:

“Cheryl is a true asset to the field and embraces the vision that all people deserve great lives, with or without a disability.”

“Cheryl continually provides good team process ideas for developing a person-centered plan that balances health, safety and welfare, along with promoting a full and engaging life for the person.”

“Cheryl is a true ‘think outside the box’ person and ‘just gets it.’”

“Cheryl always brings the focus back to what is best for the individual and how are we there to support and encourage.”

We are very proud of Cheryl and all her efforts and contributions, and are fortunate to have her on the Fayette County Board of Developmental Disabilities team.
