Second half surge lifts Blue Lions to 81-55 win over Clinton-Massie
ADAMS TOWNSHIP - Tied at halftime, Washington Court House (15-1, 9-0) opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run, added another 13-0 run in the period and went on to romp 81-55 over Clinton-Massie (5-11, 1-7) in a South Central Ohio League matchup Tuesday.
The Blue Lions posted 31 points in the third period to take a 59-38 lead. Kyle Slone had 11 points in the period. Matt Stringfield had eight, Casey Shaw had seven and Julian Wyatt had five.
All four of them finished in double-figures, led by Shaw with 23 points. Slone added 21. Stringfield and Wyatt had 19 and 11, respectively.
Justin Straight led Massie with 12 points.
"There's a reason they're undefeated in the league and you saw it in the third quarter," Massie head coach Brian Mudd said. "We would have had to play perfect basketball to match them and we played anything but perfect basketball."
Eleven of Washington's points in the 13-0 third quarter run came off Falcon turnovers. Shaw hit a three and Slone had an old-fashioned three-point play in a 20-second span. Slone followed with another three a minute later. A Max McKinney steal led to a Stringfield three.
"We tried to better defensively pick them up in the full court (in the second half)," Washington head coach Gary Shaffer said. "I think we were 0-of-7 in the first half from three. We shot better in the second half and a lot of that had to do with our defensive intensity."
Stringfield and Slone combined for 13 points in the first quarter to help the Blue Lions build a 17-12 lead.
Massie came back to tie the game at halftime behind a pair of Nick Stivers bombs. The first gave Massie a 25-24 lead with 44 seconds left in the half. The other, at the buzzer, tied the game at 28.
Clinton-Massie (7-9, 4-5) won the reserve contest 51-47 behind 19 points from Tyler Uetrecht. Laike Wallace led WCH (8-7, 4-5) with 14.
SCOL play continues Friday with Washington hosting second place Madison Plains and Clinton-Massie hosting London.
