On a warm, humid first Friday in October, the Miami Trace Panthers went looking for their second win in a row as they welcomed the Red Raiders of London for an SCOL match-up.
The Panthers won the game, 62-14.
Miami Trace rushed for a season-high 466 yards as they improve to 3-4 overall, 2-1 in the SCOL.
The Red Raiders fall to 1-6 overall, 1-2 in the league.
For the Panthers, Kenny Perkins had touchdown runs of 45, 24 and 81 yards. Those came in the first, second and third quarters, respectively.
Jimmy Eddlemon had touchdown runs of 7, 5 and 73 yards. Two of those came in the second quarter and the other came in the third quarter.
Nathan Williams also had a touchdown run of six yards in the first quarter.
Finally, in the fourth quarter, Colt Ward had a six-yard touchdown run and Sherman Howland had a touchdown run of two yards.
For London, Marcus Redmond caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Justin Wolverton. That came with 2:51 to play in the third quarter.
With just 42 seconds remaining in the third, Wolverton connected with Jordan Hawkins for a 40-yard scoring strike.
After a tough start to the season, the Panthers are starting to put the various pieces of their game together.
"We have to keep building on this momentum," Miami Trace head coach Jeff Conroy said. "All of a sudden, offensively we've played better the last two ball games. Defensively, we're still playing good football. I thought our defense played great tonight.
"Our running game is starting to click a little bit," Conroy said. "We're starting to become a little more explosive. We had some big runs tonight. Kenny Perkins had a good game. Nathan Williams, he was a little sick tonight. He had one touchdown for us.
"I thought Herbie Carson came out and hit some clutch passes," Conroy said. "He had a nice touch on the ball. He made some clutch passes.
"We're starting to play a little better," Conroy said. "Again, it was a good night tonight. We rushed the ball really well tonight. We played good defense. We did have a couple of kids banged up tonight, that might be the biggest thing.
"We've got to go down to Greenfield next," Conroy said. "We're taking this one game at a time now. Hopefully our kids will keep playing at this level and we can keep this momentum going."
It was another tough loss for London, following the loss last week against Clinton-Massie.
London head coach Bill Dennis gave his thoughts following the game.
"The Miami Trace mystique is back," Dennis said. "They played real well tonight. We were just concerned about when they were going to put it together. Unfortunately, we brought out the best in them.
"They played well tonight," Dennis said of the Panthers. "We have to tip our hat to these guys. We didn't execute at the right time and they took advantage of some mistakes we made."
London returns home next Friday to host Hillsboro in another SCOL contest. The Indians won at Madison Plains Friday night, 26-6.
"We have to regroup," Dennis said. "I can't explain this. The wheels fell off and we couldn't put them back on tonight. This is a great group of kids. They'll regroup and play hard and practice hard we'll try to get us a win next week."
