Fayette County has been chosen to receive $25,887 in federal funds in order to help emergency food and shelter programs in the area.
The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities USA, National Councils of Churches of Christ in the USA and United Way of America. These organizations will provide the administrative staff and function as fiscal agent, according to Bambi Baughn, the director of the Community Action Commission of Fayette County.
"The board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country," said Baughn.
A local board will determine how the funds awarded to Fayette County will be distributed among emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.
"Fayette County has distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously with Community Action, My Sister's House, the Community Food Pantry, the Commission on Aging and several churches participating," said Baughn.
Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local governmental or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must: be non-profit, have an accounting system and conduct an annual audit, practice nondiscrimina
tion, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.
All agencies requesting funding must submit a written application to Baughn at Community Action, 1400 U.S. Route 22 Northwest, Washington C.H., Ohio 43160. For a copy of the application, call Baughn at 335-7282 or email her at bbaughn@cacfayettecounty.org.
Applications must be submitted by March 16. "Qualifying organizations are urged to apply," said Baughn.
The local board will meet on March 17 at noon to prepare the local county plan for distribution of this year's allocation.
