Fayette County Memorial Hospital emergency department to begin make-over

The community will soon begin to see changes in the emergency department at Fayette County Memorial Hospital.

The hospital is in “phase one” of remodeling the emergency department, according to Chelsie Hornsby, director of business development at Fayette County Memorial Hospital.

“The emergency room is the front door to our organization, period. Going through the front door, the emergency room was actually built for 9,000 patients and we’re seeing on average of over 18,000 patients a year. So we’re seeing double the amount of patients that that area is fit for. Even just walking up the ramp from the emergency room, it’s seeing 40-to-50,000 people in foot traffic a year,” said Hornsby.

Hornsby said the emergency room department make-over is being paid for by charitable funds raised by the Fayette County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

“The foundation has donated over 35,000 dollars to allow for some cosmetic, efficiency and privacy enhancements. What that is going to look like is new flooring and a new front desk registration area, new waiting room furniture, and tearing off the pink wallpaper,” said Hornsby.

Some of this development in the emergency room will begin later this year. Hornsby said the hospital would like to eventually move the front entrance of the hospital’s emergency department. To do that the hospital will have to raise additional funds, which they hope to do with charitable donations made by philanthropic members of the local community and through the foundation’s annual gala.

“Just walking in the door and making that change is an important first step,” said Hornsby. “It’s very exciting and what the hopes are in the near future is with potentially a larger campaign it will allow for us to go into the actual patient care areas, such as the actual emergency rooms where patients are receiving care.”

Hornsby said the hospital is grateful for the support it receives from the local community, with everything from volunteers to donors and people who offer suggestions.

“We hope the community continues to support us by utilizing our services but from a monetary stand-point, we’re always accepting donations, even from any organization that is looking for ways to give back to the community. We feel that having healthcare available right here in town is a huge benefit for all our friends and neighbors. Also they can call the foundation office and talk to a board member,” said Hornsby.
