Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children in the United States. Did you know that today 25 children will die in the United States from an unintentional injury? This week one child will die from choking on food. This month 18,750 children will be admitted for an injury.

Educational programs such as Safe Sitter equips babysitters and siblings with skills and knowledge to prevent most injuries. The Fayette County Health Department is offering classes this summer to young teens, boys or girls, who are going into sixth, seventh or eighth grades who want to babysit or care for siblings.

This class teaches safety skills, child care skills, first aid, choking and rescue, and life and business skills to help young sitters be successful on the job. The classes are held at the health department on certain Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class is one day only, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The cost of the class is $40.

Each participant gets a Safe Sitter kit which includes the student manual, cinch bag, flashlight and Band-Aid dispenser, important information note pad and their completion card. Each participant should bring a packed lunch for themselves.
