Five were honored during the Signature HealthCARE of Fayette County’s Hall of Fame Cafe at its facility in Washington C.H. on Thursday evening.

The event began with Stefanie Arminstead, quality of life director, welcoming the crowd of friends, family and employees. Chaplain DeVon Davis said a prayer for the food and the crowd was invited to enjoy the refreshments. Occupational therapist Jayna Rogers performed on cello throughout the evening and as well as during the induction ceremony for the honorees. Chaplain Davis then read “Hometown Hero,” a poem about the importance of heroes in our everyday lives.

The first Resident honoree was Mildred Berry, known to the residents and employees of Signature HealthCARE as Millie. Berry, 88, has been a long time resident of the home having lived there for more than 20 years. She is known for her hard work, sweet personality and her attention to details. Berry obtained these attributes from working on her family farm as a youth and young adult.

Berry worked in all aspects of the family farm from helping in the fields to caring for the farm animals. She lovingly took time to teach her niece and cousin to cook, fold laundry and care for the house. Berry has a keen memory and has cherished many cards and notes people have given her over the years.

“We at Signature HealthCARE are honored to be a part of Millie’s life,” Arminstead said.

The second Resident honoree was Charlene Jackson. Tonya Adkins accepted the award on her behalf and spoke of Jackson. Jackson, 91, resided with her husband, Robert of 51 years, in Greenfield for all her life. Jackson and Robert had four children, Roberta, Rita, Carolyn and John. The couple over time were blessed with more than 25 grandchildren.

Jackson worked as an aide at the Greenfield hospital and as an OB nurse for the last 15 years of her career. She attended church at Shorter Chapel AME church where she trusted Christ as her savior in 1978. Faithfully serving the Lord, Jackson was a member of the church choir and a soloist as well. She is known for her soft spokenness and gentle nature as well as a lover of all animals and children. She used all of her talents to serve the Lord.

The final Resident honoree was David Whitmore, 87. Whitmore resided in Washington C.H. with his wife most of their lives. He was a member of Rogers Chapel AME church and served in the United State Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Whitmore served his community as a Mason and is a member of the Cedar Grove Lodge #17. He is loved by the staff and residents of Signature HealthCARE. During the ceremony, the staff and crowd applauded and thanked him for his service to the country and for his exceptional character.

Next, employee Jerri Upthegrove was honored as the Staff honoree. Upthegrove started work as a housekeeper at Signature HealthCARE in 1987. She worked as a therapy technician in 1996-1997 and went to Clark State college for activity director certification, serving in the activity department until 1998.

Upthegrove, a Fayette County native, enjoys long walks and reading. She spends time with her grandchildren, Aniah and Jay, and is expecting two more grandchildren in October and January. She goes out of her way to always have a positive attitude while at work. She cares about the residents and their needs, displaying principle six of their creed: Compassion. She is a great example of teamwork and the staff said they are proud to have her working with them and glad she is being recognized for her achievements.

Finally, Dr. Brian Jenks was honored as the Community Leader honoree. Jenks is board certified by the American Osteopathic Association in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. Jenks graduated from Miami Trace and the University of Pikeville – Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. He recently completed his residency in Osteopathic Family Practice and Manipulative Treatment at the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

Jenks has extensive training in many areas of family medicine. Using Osteopathic medicine, or a whole person approach to medicine, he doesn’t just treat specific symptoms or illnesses. Regarding the body as an integrated whole, Jenks focuses on preventative health care. Jenks said he is excited to return to his community to serve as a physician after years away. He is located in Medical Arts Building 2 suite 230 and is welcoming new patients of all ages from children to the elderly.

The evening ended with a few closing remarks from Arminstead, including one last “thank you” to the crowd for attending.
